Prayers of the People for Last Sunday of Epiphany Year A

 Prayers of the People

Let us pray for the Church and for the world.

Gracious God, on the holy mountain you spoke your word and revealed your glory. Give your Church ears to hear and hearts to obey, that we may listen to your Son and follow him in the way of the cross and resurrection.

In the name of Christ, hear our prayer.

Unite your people in the truth of your Scriptures: a lamp in a dark place until the day dawns. Guard us from “private” faith that answers only to itself; form us by your Spirit into a community of humble, patient, and faithful interpretation.

In the name of Christ, hear our prayer.

We pray for the leaders of the nations and for all who exercise authority. Where rulers rage and plots multiply, teach the powerful wisdom and restraint; establish justice, protect the vulnerable, and turn hearts from violence and pride toward mercy and the common good.

In the name of Christ, hear our prayer.

We pray for all who are waiting—those in long uncertainty, those who keep vigil beside hospital beds, those who endure grief, unemployment, fear, or loneliness. As Moses waited in the cloud, grant us endurance and trust when your presence is hidden and time feels long.

In the name of Christ, hear our prayer.

We pray for those who minister and those who bear responsibility in your Church: for bishops, priests, deacons, and lay leaders; for vestries and councils; for those who govern in seasons of absence, transition, or strain. Keep us from anxious substitutes for living faith; give us steadiness, courage, and shared responsibility.

In the name of Christ, hear our prayer.

We pray for the poor and the oppressed, for refugees and the displaced, for those harmed by systems that devour rather than protect. Let your glory be known not as spectacle but as holiness that heals, feeds, shelters, and sets free.

In the name of Christ, hear our prayer.

We pray for the sick and those who suffer in mind, body, or spirit, especially __________. Surround them with your light; let Christ draw near, touch them with compassion, and speak peace: “Do not be afraid.”

In the name of Christ, hear our prayer.

We commend to you those who have died, especially __________. As your morning star rises, bring them into the dawn of your everlasting life, where your glory is no longer veiled and love has the final word.

In the name of Christ, hear our prayer.

Celebrant concludes,

God of cloud and fire, God of mercy and majesty: receive these prayers we offer, and make us faithful—ready to descend from the mountain, to listen to your Son, and to bear your light into the world; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
