My working thesis of the moment:

Pollsters mislabel and thus misunderstand an important segment of the electorate.  What they often call “Evangelical” in polls about American politics, should more properly be labeled “Jacksonian.”  It puzzles outsiders that “Evangelicals” would give their political support to Trump, but if you change that label to “Jacksonians,” then no puzzlement is necessary.  See Walter Russel Mead’s, “The Jacksonian Tradition.”
